Media Concepts
I have been given the task to take to my blog and talk about this class. Talk about the ups and downs and likes and dislikes. Here are my plans/aspirations for the future of my Media Studies degree.
To focus only on Media Concepts though, overall the word that comes to mind is consuming. Not just time but mind as well. Our teacher, Virgil Wong, a filmmaker, web designer, really a renaissance man for the media age, made sure no software program was left unturned. At times it was exhausting because you wanted to make this great piece of work with limited knowledge. I guess that’s the whole point though. Find those outlets that you want to know more on. His class is like an appetizer to media production.
I learned a lot in this class. I still can’t believe I had time to make all the things required each week. I’ve found my passion still remains with the web. Where it came from and where it’s going. I want to focus more on the newer aspects of the web like video. Before it was all about bringing video to the web just to get it here, now I want to make it something that is more meaningful to the art form of media.
To get to this point I plan to hit my head on the wall a lot. Spend a lot of time in the labs at school. Tap into the amazing resources that the New School offers, not to mention the brilliant students they have going there. I want to focus more on making film instead of just bringing it to the web. To understand something is to understand it from creation. That’s the greatest thing I’ve taken from this class, the appreciation of where each media form began and has become. As a challenge we are supposed to say what we would do with 150 million dollars and then just 150 dollars. Well first I would buy all the software and equipment in the world to do more with media on the web. With just 150, the answer is still the same, just with less software and equipment.
