Barack Obama is Pro New Media

One of the perks of working at a large corporation is the amazing speakers they bring in. Today I had the pleasure of hearing Barack Obama speak. One of the items that came up was New Media! He said that what he loved most about new media is that it isn’t scripted and it is authentic voice. The New Media items he puts out are normally on the spot interviews that are then taken by his new media group and within moments distributed out on the Web. He likes that it breaks through the gridlock of information that comes at each of us everyday. He had a lot of other areas he of course touched on. If you’re in New York he has a rally at Washington Square Park this Thursday at 5:00pm.

Speaking on the Potential of a Career in IT

I was recently asked to be on a panel of IT professionals at St. Louis University (my undergraduate university). I majored in both Management Information Systems and Marketing there.

The Event Details:

Tuesday, March 27, 2007; in the Anheuser-Busch auditorium of the Cook Business School Building on the SLU campus (3764 Lindell Blvd.).

Lunch will be served following the seminar and we view this as a time for significant informal interaction with students.

The activity is being sponsored by the Society for Information management (SIM) and Microsoft. We will also be raffling items of interest to students including a Microsoft Xbox.

I’ll be discussing what I do at my job and where I see the IT industry going. Not sure what I’m exactly going to say yet, but I’m hoping I can play off the questions that I’m asked. I will be touching on Social Media and the role IT plays to support the new communication tools on the web. Luckily, I’ll be on a panel with three other SLU alum’s that work at different companies in the local area that hour. Speakers from Microsoft, AT&T, Anheuser Busch, Enterprise Rental Car, and Monsanto will also be on hand. If anyone has anything good they think the next generation of IT professionals should be aware of let me know. Below is the flyer for the event.

The Value I Get from Twitter …

I like to try all the new social media tools and networks, even if I may not find substantial use for them. For instance, this weekend I will be trying out Kaneva, now that it has officially gone live. Thanks to Greg for posting about it.

With Twitter, I loved the idea, and then I started to use it. Man, I was depressed reading my feed! For some reason, work, school, and running just seemed boring. Real shocker. I even put a widget for it on my MySpace page when I first started using it, thinking my friends may want to try it out. After realizing I was getting much out of it, I decided to abandon Twitter having given it a good shot. Then recently, my number one source for news, the New York Times, launched a feed on it! (Cnet just launched one too). I like to think that they are cutting edge; they would have to be to keep such amazing writers. They never seem afraid to jump out of the traditional newspaper box. So, I’ve decided to give Twitter another chance. It’s easy enough. Takes me about 2 seconds to update. It’s slightly like Facebook’s feed yet less stalker like since I’m writing in what I’m doing instead of them telling everyone without my permission. I’ve pulled the RSS feeds from innovative adopters such as Scoble and Rubel in my reader, as well as my favorite news sources. Anyone else have some tips? I’ve subscribed to the feed on all things Twitter but am afraid I’m still missing something I would find a lot of value from.
