Silicon Alley 100: People’s Choice

Make sure to vote for your favorite bloggers, podcasters, or social media gurus.

The Silicon Alley 100 is an annual list, published by the Silicon Alley Insider, of the most influential people in New York technology. We thought it would be fun to do a People’s Choice list. (Note: This is not officially affiliated with SAI; also, a dinner at Angelo’s in Little Italy has been offered to the top 3 finalists)

I’ve cast a couple of votes. I’ll let you know who they are after the winners have been announced.

Listen to Podcasts on your Phone

Just another option if you don’t have the wonderful ipod or itunes. I was reading TechCrunch today and found a good service that allows you to listen to your favorite podcasts on your phone.

Web site Podlinez assigns a phone number to any podcast, meaning that you can listen to the latest episode of your favorite podcast any time you want; you just need to dial your podcast’s number.

Now the phone calls are not toll free, so you’ll want to keep an eye on the length of the podcasts you listen to with Podlinez. But just think, you don’t have to download anything to listen to your podcasts. If your favorite podcast doesn’t have a number, just enter the feed URL and it will give you one!

Podcast Seminar

This past Thursday I had the privilege of attending a seminar put on by a Morrie Reece (no association with Tuesdays with Morrie). It was sponsored by the local chapter of AIGA. We learned about podcasting, and a few new ways of creating audio or video messages that can be published by an individual or an institution. Morrie is a senior development consultant with Apple Computer and has actually been with company longer then Steve Jobs! Granted now Steve Jobs famously left and came back to Apple, thank goodness for them. Did you know Apple didn’t coin the phrase podcast? It was actually out there before they even created the ipod. I also learned that there are five types of podcasts and we had the opportunity to create them with him.

There is definitely a lot more you can do with podcasts then I had previously thought. I’ve only created video and audio podcasts so this was a great learning experience for me. We created PowerPoint ones that include chapter links and voice overs using software called profcast. You literally drag your PowerPoint presentation into it and click record. As you click the button your slides advance and chapters are created within your podcast. This way a user can skip around in your podcast to the section of interest to them. He used a mic by BlueMic, the same people that create mic’s for famous recording artists such as Bob Dylan. The one I’m getting is called Snowball and is only $150. Not bad for the quality in sound it produces. I also suggest getting GarageBand. They have hundreds of sound effects and songs, all for free you can use in your podcast. Below are links on how to create these different types of podcasts and what software and hardware requirements there are. Make sure to send me the ones that you do so I can check them out.
